Battley Best Orienteer

C. Battley (Pupuke) won the senior orienteering race, of 15 controls, held in the Te Marunga tree farm, Whitford, yesterday morning, in the very fast time of 1h 6m 15s.

Held in a new forest area, the event was ideal training for the New Zealand championships, which are to be held in two weeks time, also in a new forest, but fortunately without the punishing gorse encountered yesterday.

The other major placings were distributed among the remainder of the Auckland clubs, R. King (Central) taking second in 1h 46m 10s and P. Cunningham (South Auckland) claiming third in 1h 59m 30s.

A. Bothner-By, a 14-year-old Auckland subjunior champion won the junior race in a smart 1h 31m with first-class map and compass work through which he suffered no loss of time on any compass leg.
